The Carroll lab is housed in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Nutrition and the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, though our collaborations range across many departments, institutions, and countries. Dr. Ian Carroll is a microbiologist from Dublin, Ireland whose research examines how intestinal microbial communities may influence or respond to a number of human disease states. Currently, our primary question is how intestinal microbes may influence and adapt to the gut environment of individuals with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa.

We work with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, basic scientists, microbiologists, and bioinformaticians to answer these and other questions, and are always open to new collaborations!
